Tennis, Anyone? Homes With Private Tennis Courts

Filed under:

By Camille Salama

We're in the heart of the Grand Slam season.

With the world's greatest players testing themselves on three different surfaces -- clay, grass and hardcourt -- in three different cities -- Paris, London and New York -- it's no wonder so many amateur players are compelled to pick up tennis rackets and start swinging.

While most people are confined to playing in public parks or at tennis clubs, some people are lucky enough to own homes equipped with private courts. In honor of the Grand Slam season, we're serving up some of these spectacular tennis court-sporting homes. From ocean-side grounds to a court with a 500-seat viewing arena, all of these homes are primed for the next match.

Inside Look: NYC's 'Steampunk' Loft (VIDEO)

If you've ever read Jules Verne's seminal science fiction novels -- "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870) or "A Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864) -- then you'll especially appreciate the inspired retro-futuristic feel of this New York City loft.

Packed to the gills with repurposed vintage nautical artifacts and antique welding tools, the space is a monument to the "steampunk" genre, which captures the aesthetic expression of a time-traveling fantasy world filled with proto-submarines, locomotives and zeppelins. From the whirligigs and steam pipes flanking the walls to the submarine portholes and deactivated bomb-pulleys, this otherworldly apartment was like nothing we'd ever seen before. And at this point, we thought we'd seen everything.

Look Out for That House! School's Wild Art Installation

This house didn't just fall out of the sky, but Korean artist Do Ho Suh might want you to think it did. On top of the University of California, San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering building sits "Fallen Star," the newest art installation for UCSD's Stuart Collection.

The 270-square-foot New England-style cottage sits at a 10-degree incline, seven stories off the ground. It is completely furnished and even comes with a front yard, garden and patio (which can double as a rooftop garden for the engineering building). According to Suh, the installation is a reflection on how he felt when leaving South Korea to study in the U.S., "as if he was dropped from the sky."

%Gallery-158632%
The entire project took seven years to complete and cost $1.3 million, the majority of which came from private donors and a $90,000 grant from the National Endowments of the Arts.

And in true California fashion, this building is up to code: It is earthquake resistant and can withstand 100 mph winds.

Learn more about the exhibit on the Stuart Collection's website.

FHA Lifts Ban on Homebuyers Who Have Credit Disputes

By Jon Prior

The Federal Housing Administration rescinded a rule that would have denied financing to potential homebuyers with ongoing credit disputes of more than $1,000, according to an alert sent to lenders Friday.

The FHA quietly drafted the rule in March to mitigate risks to its emergency fund. The rule went into effect April 1. Borrowers had to either pay off the outstanding balance on collections accounts or document an arrangement to pay before the mortgage was approved.

Industry experts pushed back, particularly homebuilders and lenders with much of their business tied to first-time homebuyers.

Gianni Versace's Magnificent Miami Home Lists for $125 Million

Talk about living in style: Casa Casuarina, the former home of the late fashion designer Gianni Versace, has just hit the market for a whopping $125 million.

Though the price tag may seem unnaturally steep to most, for this level of luxury real estate, it's no surprise. The world famous home, built in Miami Beach in 1930, sprawls across 19,000 square feet. It features 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a 54-foot-long pool lined in 24-karat gold and ornate, Medusa-emblazoned front gates (the same gates at which Versace was fatally shot in 1997).

"This is not only the most well-known property on South Beach," says listing agent Jill Eber of Coldwell Banker, "it's also known worldwide for its attention to detail throughout every room, its elegance and its style."

Its link to one of the world's most iconic fashion designers probably doesn't hurt, either.

Versace bought the home and its adjacent lot in 1992 for just under $10 million, and then invested another $33 million in the property. The haute couture designer added a 6,100-square-foot south wing, a mosaic-covered courtyard, frescoes on the home's walls and ceilings, and the aforementioned gold-lined pool.

%Gallery-157694%
Three years after Versace's death, telecom entrepreneur Peter Loftin purchased the property for $20 million and turned it into a luxury boutique hotel with restaurant.

The multi-million-dollar listing joins a slew of former homes of late celebrities currently on the market, including Michael Jackson's California chateau, Beatle George Harrison's Swiss manor and Amy Winehouse's London apartment.

Senior Risks Eviction Over American Flag Display

Filed under:

A senior housing complex is threatening to evict a New Jersey woman, saying she broke her lease agreement by hanging three small American flags from her balcony.Dawn Paulus, 75, reportedly received notice that she had to have removed the flags, which are clipped to her balcony (shown at left), by early May or face eviction. A provision in her lease prohibits items from being affixed to balconies.

"I understand that's their rules, but I'm still sticking to my Constitutional rights," Dawn Paulus told NBC affiliate WSMV.

Paul Rummerfield, the housing authority executive director of the federally subsidized low-income housing complex in Phillipsburg, N.J., said that one reason the rule is in place is to keep visitors or residents from hanging weighted buckets on the flags, which could result in injury to passersby if the buckets drop.

"They say I should be shipped off to the Russian gulag, that I'm anti-American," Rummerfield told WSMV.

He cited another reason that the complex is cracking down on the flags and balcony violations in general: They could ruin the paint job. Last year, the complex underwent a $700,000 renovation, which included brand-new balconies and railings. The old ones were rickety and, in some cases, "held up by wires," Rummerfield said. After the installation, it was decided that the anti-hanging provisions (not just flags but anything attached to the railings) would be strictly enforced. When asked why three small flags posed a problem, Rummerfield explained that the architect was wary of clipping anything to the railings, as it might ruin the new paint job and cause other structural damage.

Rummerfield told AOL Real Estate that he has been in contact with Paulus and the housing board and that they are in the process of working out an "amicable solution." He said that he is confident that they can come to an agreement that lets Paulus hang her flags while not violating her lease.

There have been several recent instances of housing associations and residents scuffling over displays of American flags.

An Oregon veteran faced eviction for hanging an American flag outside his apartment over Memorial Day, and an Army veteran in Ohio fought his homeowners association for the right to fly an American flag outside of his house.

Homeownership Still a Dream of Most Americans, Survey Says

american homeownership survey Despite crumbling home values amid the housing downturn, the majority of Americans still aspire to own their own homes.

A new survey by Integra Realty Resources found that 75 percent of non-homeowners ages 22 to 50 would still like to own a home someday. Younger Americans were even more positive: Of those younger than 30, 47 percent said buying a home was very important to them; of those older than 30, 41 percent had the same response.

Despite this enthusiasm, many Americans are financially unable to take advantage of record low mortgage rates and low house prices. When asked why they haven't purchased a home yet, 31 percent of respondents said that they couldn't afford the down payment, 24 percent answered that they wouldn't buy one due to fear of making a bad investment, and 21 percent expressed concern about their uncertain economic outlooks.
